MUI Urges Chinese Government to Clarify Cases of Uighur Muslims

Siaran Utama. The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) spoke about cases of discrimination by Uighur Muslims in Xianjiang Province, China, allegedly carried out by the Chinese Government.

Chairman of the Central MUI Education and Cadreation Division, KH. Abdullah Jaidi said that the case of Uighur Muslims in Xianjiang Province had devastated Muslims throughout the world, especially Indonesian Muslims.

He also regretted the attitude of the Chinese Government which seemed closed in connection with cases of violence that occurred in the Uighur Muslims.

"MUI regrets the information about the arbitrary actions of the Chinese Government against Uighur Muslims who make up the majority of the population in Xianjiang Province. We ask the Chinese government to clarify what happened in Xianjiang Province to Uighur Muslims," Abdullah Jaidi said at the Central MUI office, Menteng , Central Jakarta, Friday, December 21, 2018.

He added, every human being has the right to practice the teachings of his religious beliefs, including for Uighur Muslims. For this reason, Abdullah continued, the oppression of Uighur Muslims violated human rights guaranteed by the International Covenant on Social and Political Right.

"The International Covenant on Social and Political Right affirms that religious freedom is a basic right for all human beings. Uighur Muslims who make up the majority of the population in Xianjiang Province have the freedom that the state must guarantee to carry out its religious teachings," he said.

He said, the MUI's insistence that the Chinese Government be able to clarify, and stop the violence that happened to Uighur Muslims was not the Indonesian government's intervention in the Chinese Government's internal affairs. According to Abdullah, when the whole world has an agreement on human rights, the Chinese government must also undergo the agreement.

"What we regret is that the Chinese Government does not take firm action against those who commit violence. Because in any country the name of violence is not allowed," he said.

According to him, it is only people who lose their minds who are emotionally violent. For this reason, Muslims in the Uighur must not be intimidated and so forth, because of the facts that occur in such a field.

"We ask the Chinese government to resolve this. And we ask the Chinese Embassy to deliver clarification, not just cover up. If it is covered, it will cause problems, "Abdullah said.
